Gwyneth Paltrow annoys authors with book-signing appearance

Gwyneth Paltrow has drawn plenty of flack for her latest cookbook, but when the Oscar-winning actress showed up to a book-signing event in Long Island earlier this week, her very presence annoyed one author so much that she wrote a long blog post about it.

The LA Times reports that Paltrow participated in an Author’s Night event at the East Hampton Library. Alec Baldwin co-created the event and the organizers include other luminaries from the literary world like Nelson DeMille, Robert Caro and A.M Homes. Paltrow herself is also on the organizing committee.

When the Shakespeare in Love actress showed up, she drew all the attention and her neighbor at the event, writer Christina Oxenberg, kept track of all her observations, penning a long blog post.

“Due to the inflexibility of the alphabet I had the questionable good fortune to be seated directly beside Gwyneth Paltrow,” Oxenberg wrote. “Since she arrived on the late side I had a chance to make some sales to new and repeat customers. There were hugs and smiles and a bloated sense that all was well.”

Oxenberg enjoyed her time before Paltrow showed up, but as a line began to form, the mounting “Where’s Gwyneth?” questions began getting annoying.

“Then the divinity in question arrived with hubby, children and a couple of massive bodyguards. The worshippers blocked my view of the whole world, abusing my tiny territory upon which to abandon their trash or lean their sorry asses,” Oxenberg wrote. She said that she decided to leave to get some food and when she came back, Paltrow’s bodyguards were blocking her way.

“Dinner, however, at my hosts for the weekend, great friend Anne Hearst and her husband Jay McInerney, which lasted until 6am when a pink light illumined the sky, was a memorably glorious night. I’m already looking forward to doing it all again,” Oxenberg concluded.

According to The New York Post, Oxenberg wasn’t the only author who wasn’t too happy. “Authors Night at East Hampton Library hijacked by movie stars with ghost-written cookbooks,” Jay McInerney tweeted.

Paltrow’s cookbook was attacked by critics and she had to defend herself against a New York Times report that one of her past books was ghostwritten.
