New GLAAD study shows six major film studios fail to represent LGBT characters enough

In a new study performed by GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, called "The Studio Responsibility Index," the organization looks at the progress being made regarding LGBT characters in film. Study examines the releases from six major studios; 20th Century Fox, Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., Sony Columbia, and Walt Disney.

Although shows like Scandal, Orange is the New Black and Under the Dome all contain LGBT characters that don’t project stereotypes, the study concludes that out of the 101 films released by these studios, only 14 had LGBT characters and only four had main roles.

Since they found that not even one film had a transgender character, GLAAD deems the industry is "20 years behind the curve,” Bustle reports. These six studios represent over 75 percent of theatrical releases.

“Until LGBT characters appear more regularly in these studio films, there will be the appearance of bias,” Wilson Cruz, spokesperson for GLAAD told The AP.

Despite GLAAD deeming the film industry hasn’t been as progressive as they’d like it to be in terms of diversifying characters to include major LGBT roles, television has made strides. But Cruz noted of films, “Hollywood films are one of the country’s most visible cultural exports. They not only impact culture in our country, but in other places too. It is a very timely report.”
