Number of Syrian children refugees reaches a million

Thursday marked a milestone in the Syria rebellion as the number of children refugees reached a million.

According to BBC News, about 75 percent of the one million refugees are under the age of 11. A small fraction of the refugees have received education or counseling after misplacement and almost 4,000 children have fled Syria without family or completely alone.

Furthermore, the United Nation’s Syria Regional Refugee Response plan which hopes to raise three billion dollars by the end of the year, has made only 38 percent of that. The UN hopes to raise a grand total of 5 billion, the largest appeal in its history.

The Guardian quoted António Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, “What is at stake is nothing less than the survival and wellbeing of a generation of innocents [...] The youth of Syria are losing their homes, their family members and their futures. Even after they have crossed a border to safety, they are traumatized, depressed, and in need of a reason for hope.”
