Top 10 David Fincher films

August 28th marks David Fincher’s 51st birthday. The Academy Award nominated director has made some of the most thrilling movies over the last 20 years. He hasn’t made a lot of movies but he when he does make one you can be pretty sure that it will be both entertaining and chilling. Fincher has only directed 9 feature films, so below are the top 9 films David Fincher has directed.

9. Alien 3: Fincher’s first Hollywood feature film. It doesn’t live up to the expectations created by the first two Alien movies, yet is still some interesting camerawork that showed signs of a great director to come.

8. The Game: A thriller that divides many people. Some people have trouble buying into the premise, but if you do then you could just sit back and enjoy the wild ride filled with twists and turns.

7. Panic Room: With a large portion of the film taking place in a small confined room, Fincher makes the audience feel just as claustrophobic. With danger lurking just outside of the panic room, the two female leads must find out someway to get out of their own house.

6. Fight Club: This film has developed a cult following, mainly by guys. Based on a novel, it tells the story of two men who form an underground fight club. The film focuses a bit too much on violence, but the twist at the end certainly stunned more than a few people when it first came out. Perhaps I have already said too much because the first rule of fight club is to never talk about fight club.

5. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: A fantasy that tells the unique story of a man who ages backwards. Written by the same writer who wrote Forrest Gump, it certainly has a similar tone as to that movie. Here Fincher uses a lot of visual effects but he does so as to compliment the story, not overshadow it.

4. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo: A remake of a Swedish film that came out only a few years earlier, Fincher certainly makes this story his own by creating a sense of danger around every corner. It also has a darker tone both visually and tonally than the original.

3. The Social Network: The somewhat true story that won three Academy Awards. Not many directors could make a movie about a social website seem like a thriller, but Fincher does just that.

2. Se7en: The first of three films Fincher has done with Brad Pitt, but this is his best one. A chilling tale about a serial killer who kills his victims based on the seven deadly sins. Fincher films this with dirty looking images to help convey the slums of the city. Fincher has a tendency to add a twist at the en but this film tops them all. If you want to know what it is all you have to do is look in the box.

1. Zodiac: Not Fincher’s most publicly acknowledged film, but everyone who sees it seems to agree that it is brilliant. Telling the true story of the Zodiac killer, Fincher masterfully paces the story to help give off the feeling that more is happening than what really is. This film also helped resurrect Robert Downey Jr.’s career. The violent scenes are much more realistic than most other movies which make them even more frightening. This is also a film about obsession as the audience becomes just obsessed with finding out who is the Zodiac. By the end you are not going to want to get up because you are going to watch it again immediately.
