Trailer Park - 8/23 Edition: 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,' 'The World's End,' & 'You're Next' head into theaters

Mysterious deaths and murders are either taking place or being investigated in many of the films debuting in theaters. In one of the most talked about films of the week, a young girl discovers that she has extraordinary powers that can help stop the annihilation of the human race.

Angels and demons collide in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. In the sci-fi adventure, a young teenage girl in New York City discovers that she is part angel warrior and is convinced to join a group of like beings in a battle against demons to save the world. She sees a whole new side of New York, a deadly underworld with vampires, werewolves, and demons. The PG-13 film is based on the popular books by Cassandra Clare. It’s running for two hours and ten minutes in 2D and IMAX theaters.

Childhood friends try to relive the old days by going on a pub crawl in The World’s End. Twenty years after their first attempt, the friends look to surpass what they did back when they were teens by drinking at twelve pubs. Things change when they’re not just battling to get to the bar, they're battling aliens. The one hour and forty-nine minute comedy is written by Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz’s Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright Pegg stars alongside Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan and Rosamund Pike. The film is rated R for language and sex.

A dinner party gets deadly in You’re Next. The Davison family reunion is destroyed when masked men terrorize the group and go on a murdering spree. The Davison’s soon discover that the most dangerous of the intruders is someone they know. The unrated horror film runs for one hour and thirty-four minutes. It’s rated R for violence, sex, nudity and language.

Nicolas Cage and John Cusack star in the limited released thriller Frozen Ground. Cage plays an Alaskan State Trooper looking to find the man behind a series of murders. He befriends a stripper and goes on a mission to protect her from being the serial killer’s next victim. The one hour and forty-four minute film co-stars Vanessa Hudgens and 50 Cent. It’s rated R for violence, sex, nudity, language and drugs.

Tensions between two longtime friends come to a head when their car breaks down in a desolate area in Scenic Route. Already at odds with each other, the two battle for survival against the elements and each other. The one hour and twenty-five minute dramatic thriller stars Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler. The limited released film is rated R for language, violence and sex.

The story behind the deaths of nine hikers in the Ural Mountains of Russia is investigated in Devil’s Pass. In the unrated suspense film, five young American filmmakers go back to the scene of the crime to try to figure out what happened that fateful night. During their journey, they come in contact with mysterious beings. The one hour and forty-minute thriller is rated R for violence and sex. It’s available in limited theaters.

A young man looks to leave his life in Havana for a better life in Miami in Una Noche. He reaches out to his best friend for help, but his friend is torn between helping him escape and protecting his twin sister. The unrated drama is running in limited theaters for one hour and thirty minutes.

A man decides to leave the riches of his ancestors for a life on the river in Savannah. He travels around the area with a freed slave as his companion. He falls for a woman of high society, but their love may not progress as a marriage between the two is forbidden by her father. The PG-13 drama stars Jim Caviezel, Jaimie Alexander, Bradley Whitford, Sam Shepard and Hal Holbrook. It’s playing in limited theaters for one hour and fifty minutes.

The life of Ip Man, the man who taught martial artist Bruce Lee, is depicted in The Grandmaster. The action film takes place at a time when China was experiencing the collapse of its last dynasty and martial arts was flourishing. The PG-13 Chinese film has English subtitles and plays for two hours and ten minutes.

The action and suspense continues next week with the release of the thrillers Getaway and Closed Circuit. Also joining in at the box office on Aug. 30 is One Direction: This is Us, a new film about the teen singing sensations, One Direction.
