Venice Film Festival kicks off as ‘Gravity’ stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock arrive

Welcome to the 2013 awards season, movie junkies. While you can argue that it started back in May at the Cannes Film Festival, it really kicks into high gear today with the start of the oldest film festival in the world, the Venice Film Festival. The event kicked off with the premiere of Gravity, bringing along stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Festival organizers announced back in May that acclaimed Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci will be leading the jury. The line-up was unveiled last month. Along with Gravity, there is also Terry Gilliam’s new film The Zero Theorem and James Franco’s Child of God.

Gravity is the new film from Alfonso Cuaron and stars Clooney and Bullock as astronauts. The sci-fi film is considered an Oscar contender and earned a positive review from Variety this morning.

According to JustJared, the stars posed for pictures for the press. Clooney left a tie at home, while Bullock wore a brightly-colored Alex Perry dress with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes.

The Venice Film Festival continues through Sept. 7 and Gravity hits theaters in the U.S. on Oct. 4.
