Young bank intern dies after working three consecutive days

Moritz Erhardt, a young banking intern, died in his student housing unit in London on August 15 after working three days straight.

Erhardt was working towards his bachelor’s degree while he attended business school at the University of Michigan as an exchange student. He also attended business school at Otto Beisheim School of Management. He completed six weeks of a seven week internship with a London branch of Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

“We are all deeply shocked and saddened,” Peter Augustin, a spokesman for the German business school, said in an e-mail, Bloomberg reports. “At the moment, we do not yet know further details. What we can say is that Moritz was a wonderful person and a dedicated student.”

Erhardt’s roommates found him unconscious in the shower. At this point, his cause of death is not known. British authorities will conduct an autopsy and investigation, the Independent reports.

Some of Erhardt’s roommates describe working long, late night hours. John McIvor, a spokesman for Merrill Lynch, has declined to comment on how many hours Erhardt may have been working.
