Benedict Cumberbatch rep shoots down ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ rumor

Star Trek Into Darkness actor Benedict Cumberbatch will not appear in Star Wars: Episode VII, a rep for the in-demand star said.

Cumberbatch was linked to Star Wars over the weekend by Film Chronicles, which did not reveal its source. The report assumed that because Cumberbatch recently dropped out of a project (Guillermo Del Toro’s horror film Crimson Peak), he was joining his Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams for Star Wars.

But a rep for the British star told The New York Daily News that this is not true.

“There is no truth to the rumour Benedict has been cast in Star Wars,” the rep told the paper. “I think the rumours are circling because JJ and Benedict have just recently had a wonderful time working together on Star Trek.”

Cumberbatch is one of the most hottest actors in the business right now, so it did sound plausible for a moment that he might join the new Star Wars film. The Sherlock star appears in three films this fall - the WikiLeaks drama The Fifth Estate, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave and John Wells’ August: Osage County. But it looks like, at least for now, we won’t see him crossover to the other major sci-fi franchise like Abrams.

Star Wars: Episode VII is set to start filming in January 2014 and slated for a 2015 release.
