Clive Tanaka sues Nicki Minaj for copyright infringement over 'Starships' similarities

Nicki Minaj is facing a hefty lawsuit after EDM’s Clive Tanake who claims that Minaj’s hit song “Starship” is a rip off from a song he created and released one year ago.

Tanake has filed a federal lawsuit in Chicago against Minaj, three writers and a producer for copyright infringement TMZ reports.

Tanake sent out a copy of his song, “Neu Chicago” and dubbed it with “Starships” in order to show the similarities in the song.

Chicago Tribune notes that Tanake prefers to remain anonymous about his identity, releasing videos with cartoon and clay characters and never actually revealing his face, and in the lawsuit the underground electronic artist remained unknown filing the lawsuit under his company’s name.

Minaj, her producer RedOne, whose real name is Nadir, Khayet, Carl Falk, Wayne Hector and Rami Yacoub, were all named in the lawsuit.

Minaj and her team have not released a comment following the news of the lawsuit. The report does not specify how much Tankea is seeking in damages.
