Fan dies after falling off walkway at San Francisco 49ers game

A fan died Sunday after falling from a walkway at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, just as the 49ers’ game against the Green Bay Packers began.

Officer Gordon Shyy told ABC affiliate KGO that the fan, who was in his 30s, fell around 1:30 p.m. just after kickoff. He was walking with his brother on the stadium’s Jamestown walkway when he fell. It is not clear how he fell, but KTVU was told by police that eyewitnesses believe the man was intoxicated.

Police would not release the man’s name so that his family can be notified first.

“We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time,” 49ers spokesman Bob Lange said in a statement.

This is just the latest example of a sports fan falling to his death at a stadium. Just last month, a man died after taking a 65-foot fall at Turner Field in Atlanta during a Braves game. A Broncos fan also fell from an escalator in Denver during preseason and was injured.

The LA Times notes that in 2007, a 31-year-old fan fell 20 feet at Candlestick Park and died.

This is the 49ers’ last season at Candlestick Park before they move to a new stadium in Santa Clara.
