'Fifty Shades of Grey' star Charlie Hunnam discusses his role

Charlie Hunnam, who was recently cast as Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey has broken his silence about the role.

The Pacific Rim star opened up about his new role when he attended the Sons of Anarchy sixth season premiere on Saturday night.

"I met with [director] Sam Taylor-Johnson a couple of times. She'd asked to meet me and we talked at length about the role, the movie and what her intention was," he said in a red carpet interview with US Weekly. "I felt really intrigued and excited about it so I went and read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character was, and I felt even more excited at the prospect of bringing him to life."

Fans of the novel have made headlines lately, expressing their dislike of the casting choices made for the film adaptation. They even started online petitions, trying to get the director to change the casting.

That does not seem to have bothered Hunnam. On the red carpet, he enthusiastically spoke of going through the audition process with his new co-star, Dakota Johnson, who was also recently cast in the film.

Johnson will co-star as Christian Grey’s bookish lover, Anastasia Steele.

"As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us," Hunnam told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. "It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it."

Fifty Shades of Grey, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, is set for an August 2014 release.
