Hollywood raked in $156 million from filmgoers this Labor Day weekend

This Labor Day weekend was a great success for Hollywood and cinemas around the country - $156 million were spent on movie tickets to new releases.

At number one, The Butler grossed $20 million. The film, which stars Oprah Winfrey and Forest Whitaker, centers on a White House butler who worked through eight presidencies.

Behind the civil rights flick, Hollywood Reporter announced that One Direction: This Is Us was the second-highest grossing movie, earning $18 million. The concert documentary follows the British teen pop band.

The number five spot this weekend took Hollywood by surprise. Instructions Not Included, a comedy spoken in all Spanish, grossed $10 million, according to Seattle Times. The movie, which is about a family in LA, filled theaters in California and Texas.

Selena Gomez’s film, Getaway flopped, landing at spot number ten. It earned only $5.5 million. The movie recieved terrible reviews, as well. In the film, Gomez plays Ethan Hawke’s sidekick. The pair must save his kidnapped wife by driving according to the instructions of a mysterious caller.
