Home of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain put up for sale as ‘In Utero’ turns 20

The childhood home of Kurt Cobain, the late singer of Nirvana, near Seattle is being put up for sale by his mother to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the group’s last album, In Utero.

According to The Associated Press, Wendy O'Connor, Cobain’s mother, put the 1.5 story, tiered bungalow up for sale this week. It was last asserted at $67,000, but O’Connor is looking for $500,000, considering the home’s historical significance. It is close to a park dedicated to Cobain.

His room still has signs that he was there - with the names of bands like Led Zeppelin still written on the wall and holes in the wall. He lived there from age 2 to 9 and later as a teen with his mother after his parents divorced.

“We've decided to sell the home to create a legacy for Kurt, and yes, there are some mixed feelings since we have all loved the home and it carries so many great memories,” his sister, Kim Cobain, told the AP. “But our family has moved on from Washington, and (we) feel it's time to let go of the home.”

Cobain, addicted to heroin, committed suicide in 1994, just after Nirvana scored hits with the albums Nevermind and In Utero. That final album is turning 20 this month and Universal Music Group is releasing a deluxe edition of the album this week.

“We blazed through In Utero,” drummer David Grohl told Rolling Stone. “I was done after three days. I had another ten f**king days to sit in the snow, on my ass with nothing to do. Once we were finished with all of the instrumentation, it was time for Kurt to do his vocals and overdubs.”

Later in the interview with the magazine, Grohl said that he believes that the album should be listened to as if it was still September 1993, before Cobain died. “To me, if you listen to it without thinking of Kurt dying, you might get the original intention of the record,” he noted.
