Lance Armstrong returns Olympic medal

Since Armstrong confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs, Lance Armstrong has returned his bronze Olympic cyclist medal.

On Thursday, Armstrong tweeted that he returned the medal and this was confirmed by a statement put out by a U.S. Olympic Committee spokesperson. Armstrong won the medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

According to Fox Sports, the tweet from Armstrong included a picture of the medal and its blue ribbon along with this message: "The 2000 Bronze is back in possession of @usolympics and will be in Switzerland asap.'' He then declined any further comments.

CBS Sports reports that the medal was stripped from Armstrong in January shortly after his interview with Oprah, in which he admitted to doping throughout his career. The timing of the return of the medal could be related to Tuesday's election of new IOC president Thomas Bach. Bach had this to say: “What we are lacking – sadly but I hope we can still come to the result – is just getting back the medal.”
