Mark Sanchez reportedly likely to undergo surgery

Wednesday, it was confirmed that New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has a labral tear in his right shoulder, and is "likely to have surgery" which will end his season before it could even start.

Sources say that Sanchez was still considering having the surgery to repair the tear in his throwing shoulder. Sanchez apparently has the option to rehab the shoulder in hopes of playing this season, but would likely still need surgery at the end of the year, ESPN.com reports.

Sanchez told ESPN late Wednesday night in a text message that there is nothing to report. He said, "If I needed surgery right now, I never would have left Andrews' office. I would've stayed and got the surgery."

Sanchez injured his shoulder in a preseason game against the Giants. According to Sports Illustrated, the injury occurred on Sanchez's second play after entering the game in the fourth quarter. He took a hard hit from defensive lineman Marvin Austin and hit the ground after being sacked by the same player on the previous play. He then left the stadium with his shoulder wrapped up.

For now, the Jets are relying on rookie Geno Smith, who threw for 256 yards, a TD, and an interception in the Jets' 18-17 win in their season opener over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
