Michael J. Fox talks struggle with Parkinson's diagnosis, how therapy helped his personal and professional life (Video)

Michael J. Fox is revealing in a new interview with Howard Stern that when he found out he had Parkinson’s disease back in 1991, he began to self-medicate every day.

“My first reaction to it was to start drinking heavily. I used to drink to party, but then I was drinking alone...Every day,” he explained, Fox News reports. He went on to cope with his diagnosis in an unhealthy way for about a year, then finally sought the help he needed through therapy.

“It was about a year of a knife fight in a closet, where I just didn't have my tools to deal with it," he said. "But then after that I went to therapy, and it all started to get really clear to me."

According to E! Online, Fox revealed some of the benefits of therapy were that it helped in both his personal and professional life. He said his marriage to wife Tracy Pollan, who he married in 1988, got “great” and his career got better, too.

It is The Howard Stern Show, so the veteran emcee had to ask about their sex life. Fox obliged, and said it was “great,” adding, "The only thing about sex, is deciding who's going to be the agent of motion."

The Michael J. Fox Show premieres tonight on NBC.
