Miss America Nina Davuluri says she must 'rise above' racist comments made following her crowning

Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America Sunday in Atlantic City, New Jersey and less than 24 hours later the recently crowned beauty is already forced to brush off racist remarks.

According to USA Today, following her win, social media blew up with a slew of racist tweets due to the fact that Davuluri is the first woman to be crowned Miss America is of Indian decent.

“[N]ice slap in the face to the people of 9-11 how pathetic,” wrote one Twitter user as obtained by Buzzfeed ."And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic," another tweet read.

“Miss America right now or miss Al Qaeda?” followed another of many comments made.

Davuluri, on the other hand, is not fazed by the horrible remarks telling the AP, “I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America."

"I have to rise above that, she continued. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American."
