Phylicia Rashad moves to directing

Actress Phylicia Rashad changes things up by taking on the role of directing.

Best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, Phylicia Rashad directed a reading of Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963. It is about four girls who were killed during the bombing at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

The play was written by Christina Ham. It starred students from Howard University and the Duke Ellington School of of the Arts in Washingtin, D.C. It took place at the Kennedy Center on Sunday to mark the 50th Anniversary of the bombing.

Rashad is familiar with the stage. She starred in Broadway's A Raisin in the Sun and won a Tony for her role. She is an alumni of Howard University, and was nominated for two Emmy's.

As a director, Rashad believes it's important to keep the writer's vision alive while leaving room for others to add their own vision.

Rashad says acting and directing is as challenging as it is rewarding.
