Prince William leaving military service to focus on charities

New father Prince William will be leaving British military service behind in order to focus on his charities. The Duke of Cambridge has completed his final tour with the RFA as a search and rescue pilot.

The BBC reports that William will now dedicate himself to his royal duties and charity work with catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, a palace spokesman confirmed. The news comes just as the couple is preparing to move into Kensington Palace in the next few weeks and after the birth of Prince George Alexander Louis.

According to The New York Times, William and catherine had been living on the Welsh island Anglesey, where he was stationed. Now, William will take a “transitional” year before Royal officials confirm what his public role will be within 12 months.

“The duke will work closely over with a foundation he has established with his wife, and with his younger brother, Prince Harry,” the palace said. “He will expand his work in the field of conservation, particularly in respect of endangered species.”

William has been named the president of United For Wildlife a conservation effort through the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Conservation has been a cause close to William’s heart. “The threats to our natural heritage are extensive, but I believe that this collaboration of the best minds in conservation will provide the impetus for a renewed commitment and action to protect endangered species and habitats for future generations,” he said in a statement.

The BBC notes that he has recorded a video statement that will be shown around the world later this year.
