'Riddick' overtakes 'The Butler' at the weekend box office

Riddick won the box office, taking in $18.7 million in its first weekend.

Vin Diesel's return to the screen saw another number one at the box office, Reuters reports. The film overtook the previous three weekends' winner in Lee Daniels' The Butler.

The Forest Whitaker movie dropped to second place with another $8.9 million to add to its total.

The Spanish Instructions Not Included, which expanded to more than 700 theaters, came in third with $8.1 million. We're the Millers and Planes rounded out the top five at the box office. The Jennifer Aniston comedy earned $7.9 million.

One Direction's documentary One Direction: This is Us dropped to sixth place, earning only $4.1 million.

According to USA Today the weekend met analysts' expectations.

The weekend opening for Riddick didn't come close to the previous two outings of Diesel's character. Pitch Black opened to $39 million back in 2000 and Chronicles of Riddick made $58 million.

Still, the $38 million film will likely be profitable by month's end, according to analysts.

Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo, said, "After a few quiet years, Diesel's star has gone up again recently, thanks to the enormous success of the last three Fast & Furious movies."
