Sting’s ‘The Last Ship’ will open on Broadway next year after album release

Sting is back with The Last Ship, his first album of original material in a decade. A Broadway show using the songs on the album is set to open in Fall 2014.

The New York Times reports that the show’s producing team announced Thursday that the show will have a trial run in Chicago next summer. After that, it will premiere on Broadway in Fall 2014. While the Chicago run is currently scheduled for June 10 to July 13 at the Bank of America theatre, dates for the Broadway run were not announced.

According to USA Today, the plot was inspired by the former Police bassist’s upbringing in a northeast England shipbuilding community. In the story, a man leaves his home in Wellsland to journey the world. He returns 14 years later, only to learn that the shipyard needs help and that his sweetheart is marrying someone.

The Last Ship was announced in July and it was later confirmed that AC/DC’s Brian Johnson will appear on the album. Sting also announced a series of benefit shows in New York next month.

The Last Ship hits stores on Sept. 24.
