‘12 Years A Slave’ earns most nominations from Gotham Independent Film Awards

As the 2013 awards season gets moving, 12 Years A Slave, Steve McQueen’s acclaimed film about a free man conned into slavery, has earned the most nominations for the Gotham Independent Film Awards.

The nominations were announced Thursday morning and honor the best in independent film from 2012. 12 Years A Slave scored three nominations, including Best Feature. Star Chiwetel Ejiofor was nominated for Best Actor and Lupita Nyong’o was nominated for Breakthrough Actor.

12 Years A Slave is being released by Fox Searchlight and hit select cities on Friday. It is opening in more cities this weekend as the distributor builds word of mouth.

David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints with Daniel Radcliffe also scored a nomination for Best Feature. THe other nominees in that category ate Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight, the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis and Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color.

The Best Documentary nominees are The Act of Killing, the Crash Reel, First cousin Once Removed, Our Nixon and Let the Fire Burn.

Ejiofor’s Best Actor competition includes Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Robert Redford (All Is Lost) and Isaiah Washington (Blue Caprice).

A strong field of Best Actress nominees includes Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Brie Larson (Short Term 12), Scarlett Johansson (Don Jon), Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color) and Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now).

The Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director nominees are Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station), Adam Leon (Gimme the Loot), Alexandre Moors (Blue Caprice), Stacie Passon (Concussion) and Amy Seimetz (Sun Don’t Shine).

Nyong’O’s Breakthrough Actor competition includes Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings), Kathryn Hahn (Afternoon Delight), Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) and Robin Weigert (Concussion).

There is also the Gotham Independent Film Audience Award and voting for that closes on Nov. 24.

As Variety notes, the awards are one of the first ceremonies in the awards season. Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) is receiving the actor’s honor, while Linklater will get the director’s honor. The awards are handed out on Dec. 2 at Cipriani Wall Street by the Independent Filmmaker Project.
