‘Breaking Bad’ gets Spanish-language adaptation

Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad may have ended on Sunday, but the saga of Walter White is just beginning for television audiences in Latin America. Sony has said that it is producing a Spanish-language version of the hit AMC show, which will focus on teacher-turned-meth dealer Walter Blanco.

Breaking Bad is a fantastic series that wasn't widely seen in Latin America, partly because cable doesn't yet have full penetration in the region,” Angelica Guerra, Sony Pictures TV’s senior vp and managing director of production for Latin America, told The Hollywood Reporter this week. “[But] there is a universality to the story and its characters that we recognized could work very well.”

As Entertainment Weekly notes, the main characters will all have translated names. Walter White becomes Walter Blanco, his wife Sylar was translated to Cielo and Jesse Pinkman is Jose Miguel Rosas. Walter’s brother-in-law Hank is Henry Navarro. The show’s title is Metástasis.

Sony said Breaking Bad was sold to over 170 international markets, but the material hasn’t found a wide audience outside of the U.S. However, Sony said that Metástasis will be the only remake for Breaking Bad. Guerra also said that they have talked about Metástasis with Gilligan, who created the original show.

“Motor homes are not popular in Colombia,” Guerra told THR. “So audiences will see Walter and Jose cooking up their first several batches of methamphetamine in an old, barely drivable school bus.”

Metástasis will air on Univision’s UniMas in the US.
