Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, Cleveland kidnapping survivors, writing memoir with Washington Post writer

Two of the three women rescued in Cleveland after nearly a decade in captivity are working on a book with Mary Jordan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer for The Washington Post and a Cleveland native.

Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus have been sitting down for interviews with Jordan, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. There is no word on when the book will be published.

The two were rescued in May, along with Michelle Knight and Berry’s child, from the home of Ariel Castro. He was later sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years in August, but he hanged himself in September.

Robert Barnett, a Washington-based attorney, is handling negotiations for the book, reports The Associated Press. Jordan will co-write with her husband, Kevin Sullivan, a fellow reporter.

“Many have told, and continue to tell, this story in ways that are both inaccurate and beyond the control of these young women,” James Wooley, DeJesus and Berry’s attorney, told the AP. “Our clients have a strong desire for privacy, but it is a reality that confronts them every day. Gina, Amanda and their families have decided to take control and are now interested in telling the story of what happened to them.”

Wooley said that he had contacted Jordan about the project. Jordan told the AP that DeJesus and Berry are looking forward to helping them tell an “amazing story of overcoming adversity.”

Knight is not participating in the book, but she is going to appear on Dr. Phil next month.
