As Batman turns 75, DC Comics unveils plans for new weekly series

Batman turns 75 and, while he doesn’t look it, DC Comics is planning on celebrating. The publisher announced that next year will see the launch of weekly series dedicated to Batman and Gotham City. Of course, in 2015, Batman will be back on the big screen in the sequel to Man of Steel.

The weekly series is titled Eternal and will be overseen by writer Scott Snyder, according to USA Today. Snyder will be a ‘showrunner,’ similar to TV producers who oversee a show, working with an experienced writing team (James Tynion IV, John Layman, Tim Seeley and Ray Fawkes) for the series. The artist will be Jason Fabok, a Detective Comics veteran.

“It's a place for me to be able to work with good friends in terms of shaping Gotham in a bigger, grander and more game-changing way than ever before,” Snyder told USA Today. He promised “we're gonna give you the biggest, craziest and most fun stuff we've done on the book and in the world of Gotham.”

According to The Associated Press, DC Comics made the announcement before this weekend’s New York Comic Con. The Warner Bros.-owned publisher also announced a new Detective Comics No. 27, a reference to the issue that first introduced Batman in 1939. Frank Miller, Neal Adams, Mike Allred, Paul Dini, Sean Murphy and others will contribute to the 109-page book.

Brad Meltzer and Bryan Hitch are also writing a ‘modern re-telling’ of the classic Bob Kane/Bill Finger story that introduced Batman.

“You'll see some humongous newsworthy stuff in it, I promise,” Snyder said about Eternal. “We want this to be a place where you get to tell a story about anything you want in Gotham, so long as we're also moving this big story forward in the background.”

Batman is easily one of the most popular comic book characters of all time. Christopher Nolan wrapped up his Dark Knight trilogy last year, but Batman is returning in Man of Steel 2, with Ben Affleck as the character. Fox and WB TV are aslo developing a drama called Gotham.
