'Back in the Game' Recap: "The Change Up"

The latest episode of Back in the Game has The Cannon giving some not so sound dating advice to Danny and Terry enjoying a wild night out on the town with Lulu.

The episode starts with Terry jumping off of a couch, The Cannon singing and dancing to “BINGO”, and Danny getting slapped in the face by another boy. Cut to Terry working at the pizza place complaining about how rude and messy the young boys are. As she gets slapped in the face with a slice of pizza she wishes to be home. When she arrives home, all of the dishes are dirty and the house is a mess. She informs them she had to use Danny’s Frisbee this morning for cereal. Danny tells her that Frisbee has a hole in it. Annoyed, she tells him she knows it does. Terry tells Danny and The Cannon that she is not a full time maid. In his normal sarcastic manner, The Cannon says he knows because the house would be a lot cleaner if she was. When checking the laundry, she realizes The Cannon did it wrong and ruined her clothes. Back in the living room, The Cannon high fives Danny as he informs him that he meant to do it wrong so she wouldn’t make him do the laundry ever again.

At the baseball game, Danny is having a hard time concentrating on pitching because Vanessa is there with David. He fidgets on the mound before throwing the ball way outside of the batter’s box. The whole team comes to the mound to talk to Danny. Danny confesses that he is distracted by Vanessa and can’t understand what she sees in David. Michael says it’s because David is great at baseball, has a great head of hair, and even has one hair on his chest. Terry walks out to the mound to ask the boys what they are doing. Danny runs down their list of problems, which includes Vanessa, one boy thinking he’s the royal baby, and the twins needing to poop. She tells them to stop wasting time and start playing. However, they’ve wasted the last minutes of the game while chitchatting on the mound. The umpire informs them the game is over.

As Terry carries the equipment, the boys run by without helping. Lulu greets Terry, apologizing for missing the game and asks how they did. Terry informs her they lost 21-0. Lulu proclaims, “That’s fabulous,” because they lost less than last time. Terry wishes for a night without males that are her son or father’s age. She suggests her and Lulu have a night out. Lulu agrees, proclaiming that they can get drunk and “end up naked on some man’s yacht.”

As Danny watches Vanessa with David, The Cannon asks him what is wrong. Danny tells him he’s done everything his mother told him to do. He’s been ice, held doors open, and is funny, but it hasn’t helped him get Vanessa. The Cannon informs him, “You can’t take advice on chicks from chicks.” He tells him that would be like receiving fishing advice from fish. The Cannons advice to Danny is to be a bad boy. . Danny points to a boy dressed in mostly black who ignoring his girlfriend and asks if that’s who he should be like. The Cannon says yes and tells him to pay less attention to Vanessa in order to gain her attention.

Later, Danny asks Terry if she ever dated bad boys and she confesses that she was married to one, but it never lasts. Danny replies, “So, what I’m hearing is that it gets you in the door.” Realizing he took that the wrong way, she tries to correct him, but is interrupted by The Cannon as Danny walks away. She asks The Cannon where he is going because he’s supposed to stay in and watch Danny so she can go out. He tells her he’s going to Bingo. When she says he doesn’t have Bingo tonight, he tells her Bingo is the name of the “chick” he’s going to see. Terry tells him she can’t go because he’s supposed to be helping with Danny. He tells her he’s already done his parenting job: “You’ve never been arrested and you didn’t become a stripper.” He suggests she sneaks out for a few hours while Danny is sleeping because that’s what he used to do when she was younger. He can’t stay. He’s on a time crunch because Bingo goes “back to the joint tomorrow.”

The next morning, The Cannon is singing and dancing to “Bingo”. When Terry asks how the date went, he replies, “She was the one that yelled Bingo.” Terry informs him that it’s her night out tonight. He questions whether or not he should be a part of co-parenting Danny. He points out that he co-parented her and she ended up divorced, working at a pizza parlor, and living with her father. The Cannon can’t believe she would trust him with Danny. She tells him she’s doing it because she’s desperate. Danny walks out dressed mostly in black, wearing a Metallica shirt, and calling Terry by her name.

At school, Danny asks Vanessa where her “little boyfriend” is. He then tells her they’re having a date later. She tells him she can’t because it’s a school night. A girl, Danica, introduces herself to Danny and asks him what music he likes. He mentions Slipknot because that’s the shirt she is wearing. Danica invites Danny to the park to hang out with her and her friends later. Vanessa speaks up and says she can probably talk her parents into letting her hang out with him. Danny tells Vanessa they can hang out another time instead and walks away with Danica.

Danny excitedly informs The Cannon that his plan worked. He then proclaims that he doesn’t like his team’s lame snacks and steals the other team’s cooler from them. He notices Vanessa waiting for him and he and The Cannon high five. Later, Terry yells at Danny for stealing the other team’s cooler. Danny tells Terry it was The Cannon’s idea. Shocked, The Cannon says, “I didn’t think you were strong enough to throw me under the bus.” The Cannon then tells Terry that he takes no responsibility because his “parenting comes with a disclaimer.” Danny then gets mouthy with both of them and is sent to his room. Terry leaves to go enjoy her night out with Lulu.

Terry and Lulu are out for drinks. Terry tells Lulu not to let her drink more than three drinks or she’ll get like her father. Terry then proceeds to order four more drinks before hitting on a guy at the bar. While Terry is out enjoying herself, The Cannon realizes Danny snuck out and now he can’t get a hold of Terry to let her know.

Terry is completely enjoying everything she feels she’s missed out on, like guys, liquor and having no inhibitions. She proclaims, “This is my jam,” as she runs out to the dance floor. As Terry continues to drink and dance, The Cannon is unable to get a hold of her. She’s so drunk she jumps off the couch and lands on the floor saying, “I’m okay. This is the best I’ve ever felt in my life.” Dick walks in, throwing his usual sexist comments around. She tells him his credit card is maxed out on “douche-elixir,” before Lulu pulls her away.

At the park, Danny is talking to Danica when he notices Vanessa walking up. He begins to tell Danica that he likes someone else when Danica’s boyfriend taps him on the shoulder. After Danica tells Danny to kick her boyfriend’s butt, her boyfriend slaps Danny’s face. Danny realizes Vanessa witnessed the entire event, becomes embarrassed, and runs away without talking to her.

While Terry throws up in the bathroom stall, Lulu says, “I’ve never been on this side of vomit before. Just relax, darling. Let it all out. Flush away those pounds.” She apologizes to Lulu and asks if they were able to put the fire out. Lulu informs her the fire was put out, but the man’s toupee could not be saved. Lulu suggests that Terry shouldn’t try to experience all she missed out on in her twenties in one night. Terry agrees as the two carefully exit the bathroom.

After returning home, The Cannon gives Danny a bag of frozen peas for his face. The Cannon tells Danny that he needs to use the bad boy routine in moderation. Danny understands the lesson and goes to his room.

The next morning, Terry wakes up to a clean house. Danny informs her that he and The Cannon devised a cleaning schedule. She notices Danny’s cheek is red. When she asks him what happened, he replies, “Rusty. Big kid. Big mistake.” He apologizes for being rude to her and The Cannon and admits that he shouldn’t change himself to get a girl to like him. The Cannon and Terry admit that they’re figuring out co-parenting. He then tells her that the chore schedule has him cleaning on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but that won’t really be happening.

At practice, The Cannon tells the boys its time to get back some of their pride. He makes them run and practice hard as he points to their previous score of 21-0. This results in the usual collision course on the filed as the boys miss balls, fall, and collide.

Vanessa comes to see Danny and shouts, “Hey, metal head. Throw me one.” He tells her he’s not that guy anymore and she tells him that’s a good thing. Vanessa picks up the bat and tells him to throw her one. He agrees to and comically informs her, “I’m going to warn you, I’ve been practicing.” He throws it and she hits it far. Danny and Terry are both surprised. Terry asks, “Hey Vanessa, you ever think of playing?”

Make sure you’re tuning in to receive all of The Cannon’s superb life advice.
