Dusty Baker out as Reds manager

After six seasons with the Cincinnati Reds Dusty Baker is out as manager.

According to the Associated Press, the team will announce on Friday that Baker will be replaced. He had one year remaining on his contract.

The 64-year-old led the Reds to a 90-win season, but was bounced out of the playoffs Tuesday after losing the NL wild-card game to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After the loss, general manager Walt Jocketty said he "thinks" Baker will be back.

Baker has managed in the majors for 20 years. He had stints with the San Francisco Giants and the Chicago Cubs before managing in Cincinnati. His teams have won five division titles and he is a three-time NL Manager of the Year, USA Today notes.

With the Reds, Baker won two of those division titles and had 90-plus victory seasons three times. Although he has built a strong resume, he has never won a World Series title. Cincinnati went to the playoffs three times, but were eliminated in the first round each year.

Baker could land a job with another team that is in the managerial hunt. While the Cubs have expressed serious interest in Joe Girardi, he will likely re-sign with the Yankees. Perhaps that will open the door for Baker to end up with his old team, though a reunion seems unlikely.
