Ellen DeGeneres produced lesbian comedy lands at NBC

NBC is going to try again with a gay themed series, this time with Ellen DeGeneres onboard as an executive producer. The network is developing a new pilot from the daytime talk show host that centers on a lesbian character.

DeGeneres is working with openly gay writer Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls), who will write and co-executive produce the untitled project, reports Deadline. Warner Bros. TV and DeGeneres’ A Very Good Producing are producing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plot centers on a lesbian whose best friend is a man. She gets pregnant, while he finally meets the love of his life. It is being developed as a half-hour, multi-camera series.

NBC has tried gay themed series before, most successfully with Will & Grace. The network aired the Ryan Murphy-created The New Normal, but that was cancelled after one season. Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes currently stars on Sean Saves The World.

DeGeneres famously came out during her ABC sitcom and currently hosts The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She will be hosting the Oscars again in March.

The news of DeGeneres’ project also comes after GLAAD released a study showing a decrease of gay characters in the current TV season.
