Lorde's 'Royals' lyrics accused of being racist

New Zealander Lorde's hit song "Royals" has been accused of being racist by an American blogger.

Veronica Bayetti Flores feels that the lyrics in "Royals" is "deeply racist," CNN reports.

Flores says that the 16-year-old's lyrics saying "every song" is about luxury items and gold teeth. "While I love a good critique of wealth accumulation and inequity, this song is not one; in fact, it is deeply racist."

The blogger adds, "Because we all know who she's thinking when we're talking gold teeth, Cristal (champagne) and Maybacks. So why sh*t on black fols? Why sh*t on rappers?"

There has been backlash against Flores, who isn't backing down from her critique, by critics and Lorde's fans. New Zealand journalist Lynda Brendish wrote a response saying, "I realize not everything in this world is an instrument of oppression, and not everything in this world should be viewed through the lens of Americans, particularly when it comes to race and cultures of other countries. To insist otherwise is ignorant at best and imperialistic at worst."

While the song has its detractors, there clearly aren't that many as the song continues to Billboard's Hot 100. The song has been at the top of the On-Demand Songs chart for two weeks now.

"Royals" also sits atop other charts, such as the Hot Rock Songs chart, where it has been there for six weeks.
