'Matilda The Musical' Original Broadway Cast Recording

The award-winning Matilda The Soundtrack is an amusing and engaging recording based off the popular Roald Dahl book. What I think I enjoyed so much were Tim Minchin's lyrics and music, which help invoke in your mind exactly what would be playing out on stage.

The music is standard musical fare, with plenty of piano's mixed with solo singing. But Minchin's music helps make some more songs more humorous than they might otherwise be with strategic use of horns and other instruments to help convey certain emotions to the listener.

The singing is uniformly excellent across the board. The best might be Lauren Ward who plays Miss Honey. Ward's voice is the strongest, even as she's trying to out-duel Bertie Carvel's Trunchbull in their joint tracks. But really, even the children in the soundtrack are all excellent singers.

It's an interesting soundtrack as there are four different Matildas used for the recording. They are all good singers, with none of them really outdoing the others.

No track is better than another as they all effectively flow into each other and taken on their own, they wouldn't work as well since it's a musical. That said, any track that includs Ward and Carvel tends to be the stronger ones, especially as they argue with each other.

My only real complaint off the whole soundtrack is that some of the kid's voices are just too high at times and it becomes somewhat grating and tiring to listen to the soundtrack for too long. It's not a huge issue, it just makes you itch to hit the 'skip' button on some lesser tracks.

Matilda The Musical is hilarious and worth the time of anyone who is a fan of the book or the movie adaptation. Even if you're not a fan, give it a check anyway.
