Shark attacks man off Northern California coast

Jay Scrivner was surfing along the Northern California coast when he was bitten by a great white shark Sunday morning. The shark reportedly appeared suddenly, but the man's injuries are minor and he is expected to make a full recovery.

According to the Associated Press, the shark was almost 10 feet long and bit his thigh while he was surfing near Humboldt Bay. No limbs were torn off.

KTVU reports that the 45-year-old was able to paddle himself to shore safely after he struck the shark and yelled out a primordial scream. He then waited for rescue crews to arrive. Fellow surfers helped Scrivner wrap his wound to stop the bleeding and kept him warm.

The Los Angeles Times further reports that Scrivner was shocked that such an incident happened to him. "I couldn't believe it happened," he said. "When I turned away from the shark, I said, 'Did I really get bit?' Your mind doesn't believe it." The area where Scrivner was attacked was a common surf spot for him and several fellow surfers.
