Trailer Park- 10/11 Edition: ‘Captain Phillips’ and ‘Machete Kills” look to kill it at at the box office

With Halloween creeping up in a few weeks, many thrillers and chillers are hitting movie theaters. Characters contact the dead and end up releasing evil spirits into their lives. Instead of ghosts, there is a real life threat in Tom Hanks’ new thriller.
An unarmed American cargo ship is attacked off the coast of Somalia in Captain Phillips. The PG-13 film is based on the true story of the MV Maersk Alabama and its crew who were pirated and held hostage in 2009. It focuses on the standoff between Alabama’s captain Richard Phillips and the Somali pirate captain, Muse. Tom Hanks stars in the two hour and thirteen minute dramatic thriller. The film is available in 2D and IMAX theaters.

The president hires a former Federale agent to take down a terrorist in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills. Travelling through Mexico, Machete tries to halt a nuclear war while battling assassins out to kill him. The one hour and forty-eight minute action film stars Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Mel Gibson. It’s rated R for violence, sex and language.

Shakespeare’s classic love story Romeo & Juliet is back on the big screen. In the PG-13 film, young lovers struggle with their relationship because of the deep seeded hatred between their families. The romantic drama runs for one hour and fifty-eight minutes.

American Idol alums Jennifer Hudson and Jordin Sparks star in The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete. When one child’s mother is arrested, two young boys end up on their own. Avoiding child protective services and scavenging for food, they struggle to survive in the Brooklyn projects. The limited released drama runs for one hour and forty-eight minutes.

High school teens celebrate the end of summer at an isolated ranch in All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. As many of the young men profess their love for the school’s “good girl,” the good time becomes deadly. The one hour and twenty-eight minute horror film is available in limited theaters. It’s rated R for violence, drugs, nudity and language.

Contacting the dead becomes deadly in Cassadaga. Looking to communicate with her deceased sister, Lily accidentally unleashes the raging spirit of a murdered woman. The truth behind the woman’s death leads Lily into the crosshairs of a serial killer who turns his victims into marionettes. The unrated thriller is running in limited theaters for one hour and forty-eight minutes.

Two roommates accidentally conjure up the dead in Ghost Team One. In an effort to find out what’s haunting their home, they install cameras in the rooms and hire a good looking amateur ghost hunter. While they fall for her, the ghost ties to get in on the action. The comedic horror film is playing in limited theaters for one hour and twenty-four minutes. It’s rated R for sex, nudity, language, violence and drugs.

The “happiest place on earth” gets scary for a family man in Escape from Tomorrow. Filmed without permission at Disney, the one hour and thirty minute horror film tells the story of a recently unemployed man at the famous park with his family. The magical place plays with the man’s sanity, haunting him with its characters, puppets and rides. The unrated film is available in limited theaters.

Following the death of her father, a young woman falls into a depression in I Will Follow You Into the Dark. She begins to experience happiness again when she meets Adam. Things are going well for her until one night she wakes up to find Adam missing and blood next to her in the bed where he was laying. The unrated, romantic horror film stars Mischa Barton and Ryan Eggold. It’s running in limited theaters for two hours and twenty-one minutes.

Set in New Mexico in the late 1800’s, Sweetwater tells the story of a former prostitute trying to live on the straight and narrow. When a radical religious leader tries to take over the land she owns with her husband, things become deadly. January Jones and Ed Harris star in the one hour and thirty-four minute drama. The limited released film is rated R for violence, nudity, sex and language.

New York’s legendary punk venue is the setting for the limited released film CBGB. The one hour and forty-one minute drama showcases the Lower east side locale that was the stage for The Ramones, Blondie, Green Day, Soul Asylum, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, George Thorogood, The Black Crowes, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers among others. Founded by Hilly Kristal in 1973 as a Country, Blues and Blue Grass music club, CBGB ended up a rock n’ roll institution featuring original music. The film stars Alan Rickman, Malin Akerman, Justin Bartha, Johnny Galecki, Ashley Greene, Taylor Hawkins and Bradley Whitford. IT’s rated R for language, sex, drugs and violence.

Get a look through the eyes of punk rock band Green Day as they embark on their Broadway debut with Broadway Idiot. With behind the scenes footage, the unrated documentary delves into the mind of frontman Billy Joe Armstrong as he takes the journey from sold out arena concerts to the inception of a Broadway musical based on his work. The unrated film is playing in limited released for one hour and twenty minutes.

Ghost Team One, I Will Follow You into the Dark, and Escape from Tomorrow all look to get a scare out of audiences this week. The horror continues next week with the release of a Carrie remake. The thrillers Escape Plan and The Fifth Estate also make their way into theaters on Oct. 18.
