We Were Lovers - 'Pyramids' Album Review

Indie, pop, rock, electronic, dance… It is hard to pinpoint We Were Lovers’ genre. Maybe especially because, it is all of the above… But one thing it for sure- it sounds hella good! So, I guess, who really cares?

The duo from Saskatoon, Canada is composed of Ash Lamothe (Guitar, Bass, Synth) and Elsa Gebremichael (Vocals, Synth).

Their music can be described as a combination of “dancey beats, swirling atmospheric guitars, and dynamic synths” all topped of with hazy, breathy and dreamy female vocals. Their quite unique and fresh approach to their music is what makes this duo stand out from all the others.

If you’re wondering whether they’re newcomers or not? The answer would be- yes and no. They have quite a musical history behind them. First, they have released their self-titled EP (October, 2010), then another EP titled Singles (October, 2013) and on November 19 they’ll release their full-length debut album Pyramids.

But that’s not all. Their impressive history includes them being an opening act for big names, such as: Janelle Monae, Metric, Tegan and Sara, Mother Mother, Handsome Furs, Diamond Rings, Awolnation…and the list goes on.

Now, let’s move on to Pyramids, which lists nine tracks. First of them, being:

Rock With Me

Is an upbeat, disco, robotic, dance song. It is consisted of addictive outlandish, electronic instrumentals and soft, hazy vocals. It’s highly addictive.

Jealous Lovers

Has that true playful 80s sound and feel to it. Combined with Madonna-esque vocals, the song is like a time travel back to that era. But, don’t get me wrong-the song is certainly unique, although it possesses familiar elements.

Islands

The intro of the song is a reminiscent of 90s electronic underground scene, then it transitions into sweet, dreamy instrumentals and hazy vocals.

The Pressure

Is a track composed of floating electronic sound and underlying bass that shapes the song. It is characterized by dancey, addictive rhythm and breathy vocals.

Bodies

Gets you immediately with lyrics: “You are a version of me, I am a version of you in different bodies.” Clever, don’t you think? The song also includes a dominant hovering guitar that gives it that sentimentality and sense of longing.

Dream Invaders

Literally sounds like an 80s synth dream. The listener is floating amidst those dreamy instrumentals and distant, hazy vocals.

We’ve Got It

Is a playful, energetic track combined with resonating, foggy vocals. It truly is a party for the ears.

Hunger For You

Is a seductive track in which the floating and lingering guitar sound accompanied by airy vocals, add to its mystique.

French Connection

Combination of dreamy instrumentals and dispersed, light vocals mimics the lightheadedness and sense of lightness one experiences when in love. The song is utterly romantic.

Overall, Pyramids's nine dreamy, hazy and whimsical tracks will certainly take you to cloud nine. Highly recommended!
