‘The Mindy Project’ Recap: ‘You’ve Got Sext’

It was date night on The Mindy Project this week, but if you’re expecting dinner and a movie or romantic walks on the beach, you’ve come to the wrong sitcom. Instead, Mindy and Danny pretended to be a couple (swoon), and Peter and Morgan pretended to be Mindy, while texting cute lawyer Cliff.

Let’s start off with the fake couple. After Mindy misplaces her purse at the hospital, she asks to stay the night at Danny’s apartment. Danny resists at first, but eventually gives in to the idea, because he secretly loves her because she’s stranded without her wallet, keys, and phone.

While walking to Danny’s apartment, Mindy gives the “I’m going to die alone!” speech that every single gal is familiar with. In an attempt to reassure her, Danny asks Mindy if there’s anyone she likes. She hesitantly describes her crush as a guy she works with but is way out of her league. Danny misinterprets Mindy’s comments and thinks that he’s her crush. In reality, she’s talking about Cliff. Danny then spends the rest of his night trying to ward off Mindy’s “advances.” Oh, the dramatic irony.

At the apartment, they run into Amy, Danny’s crazy neighbor and one time hookup. In order to make her leave, Danny asks Mindy to pretend to be his girlfriend. Mindy pretends a little too well and tells Amy that her name is Chloe Silverado, she and Danny are engaged, and they’re expecting a baby. Her story simultaneously makes Amy go away and terrifies Danny. It was awesome.

Later that night, Amy sneaks into Danny’s apartment to tell Mindy that she had sex with Danny while they were together. In an act of genius, Mindy asks to hear every uncomfortable detail about the affair. After learning some of Danny’s strange bedroom quirks, Mindy agrees to stay with her (fake) fiancé.

“Thank you for you honesty,” Mindy said. “But I think I’m going to stick with Danny. Like Hillary, or Huma, or Silda, or briefly Maria Shriver before she was like, ‘Wait, why am I doing this? I’m the rich one.’”

Mindy then discovers that Amy was a little more than a hookup. She had a key to Danny’s apartment, spent most nights with him, and got homemade breakfast in the morning.

“You do not make pancakes for someone who is just a hook up. I’ve been told that by like 10 different guys,” Mindy said while confronting Danny.

Mindy forces Danny to apologize to Amy for dragging her along. They’re in the clear for about five seconds, and then Danny calls Mindy by her real name. Fortunately, they make a quick recovery. Amy claims that Danny never looked at her the way he looks at Mindy. Hmmm, I wonder what that could mean? That he’s secretly in love with her!!!

While Danny and Mindy’s fake love affair was taking place, another fake love affair occurred on Mindy’s cell phone. Morgan and Pete find Mindy’s purse, including her phone with a text from Cliff. The two decide to text for Mindy, so Cliff stays interested in her. After some suggestive banter back and forth and one provocative exchange of winky faces, Cliff tells “Mindy” that he’s coming over to her place.

To keep the ruse going, Morgan and Pete throw an impromptu Veterans Day party at Mindy’s apartment. Their terrible, however funny, plan doesn’t last for long. After several games of Scrabble and one guest appearance from Ellie Kemper’s Heather, Morgan and Pete come clean to Cliff about the text messages. For a guy who sexted with two other guys for most of the night, he takes the news pretty well. All he asks is that they delete the messages on Mindy’s phone.

Cliff ends up going home with Heather, and Morgan ends up not deleting the texts.

The next morning at work, Mindy gets her purse back. She immediately finds out that Heather and Cliff hooked up, and in the final Cliff-hanger (See what I did there?) she sees the entire text conversation from the night before.

What did you think of the episode? Can you wait for next week? Because I can’t. Comment below!
