Charges against Florida teens accused of cyberbullying dropped: ‘I did nothing wrong’

Last month, two Polk County, Fla. teens were arrested on charges of stalking, accused of cyber bullying a classmate who later committed suicide. However, on Wednesday, those charges were dropped and one of the girls appeared on the Today Show to clear her name.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in October that officials believed that the girls, ages 12 and 14, were responsible for 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick’s death in September, reports The Associated Press. On Wednesday, attorney Jose Baez confirmed that charges against his client, the 12-year-old suspect, were dropped. Then the 14-year-old’s attorney, Ronald Toward, told the AP that the State Attorney's Office in Polk County told him her charges were dropped as well.

“I found zero evidence having to do with my client that would rise to the level of a criminal act,” Baez told the media.

Later, Judd held his own press conference, defending his actions. “Our goal is that these kids never bully anyone again, never torment anyone again,” he said.

The younger suspect, Katelyn Roman, appeared on the Today Show this morning and said she did nothing wrong.

“No, I do not feel l did anything wrong,” she said, with Baez by her side. When asked if she learned anything from the ordeal, Katelyn said, “I learned that it’s not OK to bully, and when you have a chance, stand up to bullies.”

Her mother, Roseanne Gill, said she was “relieved” and that “It’s been a horrible experience for me and my daughter and my whole family.” She continued, “This can happen to any child in America, and we have to make sure that we watch our children’s Facebooks. This can happen to anyone, not just my daughter. It could’ve happened to anyone.”

Katelyn’s father, Emilio Roman, expressed his condolences to Rebecca but had strong words for Judd. “It was uncalled for for Grady Judd to go up there and throw her picture up there and people coming to my house and trying to come and threaten my family, threaten me on the phone, threaten me at my house, I mean it was just crazy the way he did that,” he said.

The Roman family is considering filing a lawsuit against Judd.
