Federico Aubele - '5' Album Review

Federico Aubele’s fifth studio album 5 is jewel that needs to be added to your little precious musical collection.

This Argentina-born and now Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter’s music will slowly sway you into an absolute obsession with his unique and haunting sound. Aubele’s not simply a musician-he is an artist who skillfully combines steel-cold electronic sound with a sensual guitar and soft, sumptuous vocals. This unusual instrumental combination covers his song with a veil of mystique.

The sensuous female and male vocals complement each other and carry such a heightened sense of passion. This makes his duet songs so bewitching and magical, oozing with emotion. And while the duets happen to be very romantic and sensual sonically, they still vocally and lyrically carry the fleeting sense of wistfulness.

Apart from the duets and solo songs, the album also features few purely instrumental tracks, such as: “Luna I,” “El Extrangero,” “Cielo,” “El Mago,” and “Trés días, una noche.” Aubele has explained how the instrumental music has a different effect on the listener: “It grabs you in a different way than if you have vocals. When there's no lyrics, a barrier lifts up and the music connects direct with other areas of your subconscious, often with emotions that are hard to put in words."

The instrumental songs on the album have that nocturnal feel to them, which makes them so magical and dark. But they are certainly open to interpretation, letting the listener interpret them however she/he pleases. It is a highly subjective and personal experience, because this time you are not told what to feel. It is the purpose of the arts and the purpose of Aubele’s instrumental tracks of the album.

All in all, 5 is a beautiful, haunting and sensual experience that will find its way to crawl under your skin and speak to not only your heart, but your soul as well.
