Less Than Jake – 'See The Light' album review

Ska great Less Than Jake has released See The Light, its first album in five years. Its sounds span its two-decade career, infused with punk and traditional ska.

Beginning with “Good Enough," a rocking fast-tempo wall of guitars driven by horns, fuels the album into a non-stop party. The formula of dark and brooding lyric content with the feel-good ska music is one that has really differentiated Less Than Jake from other ska/punk acts. “Do The Math,” a definite standout on the album, showcases this; the message is that life is short, but the groove will still have a crowd dancing and jumping throughout.

Other tunes on the album, like the punk-rock “Bless The Cracks” and skank-ready “John The Baptist Bones,” displays the band’s growth and maturity while it sticks to its roots. “Give Me Something To Believe In, Inc.” goes the more traditional route with genre defining upstroke guitar riff powered by staccato horns, and closer “Weekends All Year Long” follow suit with more rock driven guitars weaving in and out.

The seventh studio album from Less Than Jake, See The Light is here to please everyone. Whether one is looking for a nostalgic trip down 90's memory lane or just discovering the genre, this is the perfect album to cut your teeth on.
