Man dressed as Jesus makes appearance at NYC marathon

A man dressed as Jesus carrying a cross was spotted at the New York City marathon on Sunday.

Yahoo! News reports that a man was spotted among marathon runners dressed as Jesus and carrying a cross.

With Halloween having just passed, many participants of the New York City Marathon wear costumes. Participants were spotted in superhero costumes like Captain America and Superman.

However, it was the man dressed as Jesus that caught everyone's attention, tweeting their reactions.

The man wearing the Jesus outfit was Makoto Takeuchi, a New York based photographer from Chiba, Japan. He has not yet responded to emails requesting his reason for wearing the outfit.

According to Daily Mail UK, a record 50,740 runners started the 26.2 mile course through the five boroughs.

Last year's marathon was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, and this years race was on high alert after the April bombings at the Boston Marathon. Bomb sniffing dogs swept the area, making sure everything was safe.

Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai, winner of the 2011 New York Marathon, won the race with a time of 2:08:24, and is also the first man to have repeat wins in New York since Kenya's John Kagwe in 1997 and 1998.
