'Once Upon a Time in Wonderland' Recap: Episode 6 - 'Who's Alice'

Jafar arrives in Victorian England with the help of the White Rabbit and goes to the asylum to question the doctor, who thinks he is insane for having seen the White Rabbit help Alice escape. The Red Queen discovers that Cyrus has escaped his cage in Jafar’s cage. The Red Queen decides to track down Cyrus so that she will have the genie, the bottle, and all the power.

Cyrus is climbing down the mountainside toward Alice and Alice is heading into the Black Forest toward him. Alice wanders into the Black Forest and when her torch goes out, she finds her way into a forest full of perfume-squirting trees and forgets about her mission. When the Knave finds her, she has abandoned her beloved necklace and is only concerned with picking flowers. Those who stay in the forest long enough become part of the trees. Alice remembers Cyrus just in the knick of time.

In a flashback, we see Alice come through a rabbit hole back to Victorian England shortly after losing Cyrus and believing him dead. Her father has remarried and had a child, and it seems that he has erased all signs of Alice from his life. Alice has to promise her father that she will never mention Wonderland again and that she will try to get back to normal. Her stepmother tries to set her up on a “date” (by Victorian standards), but she is simply not ready. When her stepmother brings the gentleman over anyways, Alice is forced to choose between finding a husband or being committed to the asylum. Alice chose the asylum.

In the final surprises of the episode, Cyrus discovers that Jafar’s castle was on a floating island that he cannot get off. The Red Queen catches up to him just as Cyrus leaps off the edge toward a vast sea below. The Knave of Hearts reveals that when Alice retrieved his heart for him, he never put it back in his chest. He wanted to avoid the pain of losing Anastasia, so he learned to live without his heart. Jafar has tracked down Alice’s father and shows up at the Victorian home, offering his assistance to Alice’s father.
