Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley to reunite on Today Show with Matt Lauer for special next week

NBC is bringing back Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley to co-anchor a special edition of the Today Show next week. Matt Lauer, who is still anchoring the morning show, will also reunite with his past colleagues.

The network said that the trio will be back together on Monday, Dec. 30.

Gumbel and Pauley co-anchored the show together for seven years before Pauley left in 1989. Gumbel stayed with the show until 1997, leaving for a short-lived CBS News program called Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel, notes Zap2It. He still hosts HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, a job he’s held since 1995.

Meanwhile, Pauley still appears on Today with a monthly “Life Reimagined Today” segment. It focuses on Americans over 50 who are reinventing themselves with new jobs.

There is no special occasion for Monday’s reunion, unlike the January 2012 get-together for Today’s 60th anniversary. It’s likely just another attempt for NBC News to grab more viewers, since the show has had to deal with increased competition from ABC’s good Morning America.
