'Catching Fire,' 'Frozen' break Thanksgiving weekend box office records

Frozen and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire have both managed to set box office records for Thanksgiving weekend and beat analysts' expectations.

Lionsgate's Catching Fire managed to pull in $110.2 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That number easily beats the previous top Thanksgiving box office weekend, which was previously $82.4 million - set by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

The Jennifer Lawrence-led film grossed $74.5 million for just Friday-Sunday, which was good enough to land in the top five for largest second weekend box office numbers, just losing out to The Avengers ($103.1 million), Avatar ($75.6 million) and The Dark Knight ($75.2 million). The film has now earned $573 million worldwide after earning another $92.5 million overseas.

Disney's latest feature, Frozen, also did extremely well, nabbing the best Thanksgiving weekend debut with $93 million, easily topping Pixar's Toy Story 2 ($80.1 million). The debut is also the best opening for a Disney Animation Studios film, easily outpacing Tangled, which brought in 68.7 million in 2010.

The numbers from the two films beat earlier projections that the two films would maybe hit $100 million and $90 million, respectively. Both managed to draw families out on Thanksgiving, with Catching Fire grossing $14.9 million and Frozen following with $10.8 million.
