ESPN cancels Ron Burgundy ‘SportsCenter’ appearance due to Jameis Winston press conference

ESPN has decided to cancel a planned appearance for Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy character on SportsCenter because of today’s scheduled press conference in the case of Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

State Attorney Willie Meggs announced Wednesday that the investigation into sexual assault charges against Winston was complete. He scheduled a press conference for 2 p.m. from the State Attorney’s office in Tallahassee.

Ferrell was scheduled to play his Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues character during today’s 6 p.m. sportsCenter broadcast, but the network decided shortly after Meggs’ announcement that Ferrell would not appear. ESPN decided to instead focus on reporting the news from the press conference. THR notes that ESPN's director of communications David Scott also confirmed the news on Twitter.

In addition to Farrell, David Koechner’s Champ Kind character was also slated to appear. ESPN did not announce when or if the network would ask them to appear on a different SportsCenter airing.

Farrell has been nearly everywhere as Burgundy, since Paramount has spared no expense in promoting the new film. It opens on Wednesday, Dec. 18 and Fandango has $33 Super Tickets available for those who want to see it on Dec. 16.
