Immigrants in New England held less frequently

Last year showed a marked differentiation in the deportation of immigrants from year’s past.

According to the Boston Globe, a total of 3,644 immigrants were jailed last year in New England, down from 5,042 the year before. Border crossers and immigrants with criminal records are some of the many people who are deported from the United States.

In New England, a new program called the Secure Communities fingerprinting program gave law enforcement professionals an edge in terms of finding illegal immigrants. Under Secure Communities, fingerprints, the F.B.I. can track fingerprints of anyone brought in by local or state authorities. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees in Massachusetts and New York considered the program in 2012.

“ICE is focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes the removal of criminal aliens, recent border crossers and egregious immigration law violators, such as those who have been previously removed from the United States,” said ICE spokeswoman Nicole Navas, according to the Washington Post.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officials hoped to deport only serious criminals with the Secure Communities program. Changing laws reflect a new, perhaps promising attitude toward deportation.
