Keira Knightley talks gender equality in Hollywood having a 'long way to go' as well as feminism

Keira Knightley spoke with Harper’s Bazaar UK for their February 2014 issue and covered such topics as feminism, gender equality in Hollywood and quitting Twitter after only 12 hours.

The Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit star, 28, talked about feminism previously being a “dirty word,” but with the help of other public figures like Beyonce, it’s evolving.

“I think it’s great that the discussions are finally being allowed to be had [about feminism], as opposed to anybody mentioning feminism and everybody going, 'Oh, f***ing shut up.' Somehow, [feminism] became a dirty word,” she told the magazine.

When it comes to gender equality in the film industry, Knightley thinks Hollywood still has “a really long way to go.”

She added, "I don’t think that anybody can deny that, really, and I think as much as you are getting more women playing lead roles… they’re still pretty few and far between."

E! Online notes Knightley touched on the topic of Twitter, saying she just wasn’t a fan and decided to pull the plug only hours after joining the popular social media site.

"It made me feel a little bit like being in a school playground and not being popular and standing on the sidelines kind of going, 'Argh,'" she admitted.
