NBC greenlights follow-up miniseries to 'The Bible'

NBC announced it has officially ordered a 12-episode miniseries sequel to The History Channel's The Bible called A.D..

News on the follow-up series had been relatively quiet since July when the network talked about filming a sequel to the popular miniseries from Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, but now the series is officially a go, Variety reports.

Simon Block will be writing the script, but no director or cast have been announced yet. NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said that A.D. will pick up immediately where The Bible ended.

The first miniseries ended with Jesus being betrayed and then dying, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Bible managed to attract 13.1 million followers for its premiere and ending the 10-part event series with 11.7 million for the finale.

Burnett and Downey also recently announced they were partnering up with CBS for The Dovekeepers, which is based off of Alice Hoffman's 2011 historical novel. Dovekeepers will be a shorter event series at only four hours and is planning on a 2015 airing, like A.D.
