Official ‘Star Wars’ Instagram launches with Darth Vader selfie

The ‘selfie’ is already recognized in the dictionary and now it is going intergalactic. An official Facebook page for the Star Wars franchise finally launched this week, beginning with a Darth Vader selfie.

The image shows the most feared villain in the galaxy using an iPhone to take a picture of himself, right after he boarded the Rebel Blockade Runner at the beginning of A New Hope. Perhaps that’s why the Empire ignored R2-D2 and C-3PO - Vader was too busy using Instagram.

Vader’s selfie already has 22,400 likes and 2,140 comments. The page itself has 79,000 followers.

Since the selfie was posted, Disney and Lucasfilm have shared two other images. One is a behind-the-scenes image of the duel between Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and another shows an early Star Destroyer model.

The Instagram page launched just as Disney and director J.J. Abrams are getting ready for cameras to roll on Episode VII in the U.K. next year. While no casting news has been confirmed yet, we do know that R2-D2 will appear in the new film.

Episode VII is scheduled for Dec. 18, 2015, making it the first Star Wars movie not to open in May.

The Oxford dictionary named "selfie" the word of the year last month.
