U2 to be honored with Sonny Bono Visionary Award at Palm Springs Film Festival

U2 will be presented with the Sonny Bono Visionary Award at The Palm Springs Film Festival awards gala on January 4th. The festival will be taking place from January 3 to January 13th.

Variety reported that the award is normally given to a film director but for the 25th anniversary of the awards ceremony the festival directors decided to do something different.

Festival chairman Harold Matzner, spoke about the reasoning behind selecting U2 to win this award. “We normally present the Sonny Bono Visionary Award to a director, but for our 25th anniversary we wanted to take the occasion to celebrate U2, a visionary group and the world’s premier rock band, for their unparalleled humanitarian work against extreme poverty, disease, and social injustice,” said Matzner.

U2 also just celebrated a nomination from the Golden Globes for their original song, "Ordinary Love," which is featured in the bio-pic, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

The awards will also honor 12 Years a Slave's director Steve McQueen with its Director of the Year Award and Lupita Nyong'o with its Breakthrough Performance Award for his work in Captain Phillips, The Hollywood Reporter added.
