UN reports on mass graves in South Sudan

As the fighting continues in the South Sudan, the United Nations says that it has found at least three mass graves, with one being outside of the capital of Juba.

One of the mass graves, outside of Unity State is said to be filled with around 75 bodies as violence continues to strike the South Sudan. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said in a statement, Reuters reports, "Mass extrajudicial killings, the targeting of individuals on the basis of their ethnicity and arbitrary detentions have been documented in recent days."

She added, "We have discovered a mass grave in Bentiu, in Unity State, and there are reportedly at least two other mass graves in Juba.

Pillay has said that both sides will be held to account for any crimes as rebel leader Riek Machar and President Salva Kiir have both said they would likely be willing to come together and try to find a way to end the month-long battling.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has asked for an increase in peacekeeping troops in the South Sudan as tens of thousands of civilians seek refuge and escape from the fighting, according to The New York Times.

Since the fighting escalated this month, over several hundred people have been killed in the South Sudan, with some areas seeing more skirmishes, such as the capital cities of Bentiu and Bor.
