ABC sets Hayley Atwell for Marvel’s 'Agent Carter' series, ABC chief Paul Lee excited

The next Marvel series on ABC will be Agent Carter, with Hayley Atwell back to play Captain America’s love interest in The First Avenger. First rumored last fall, the network has confirmed that Atwell will reprise the role and has set the showrunners.

Back in September, it was first reported that Agent Carter was in development to expand on a short film included on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray. It would follow Carter’s spy adventures after The First Avenger, following Captain America getting frozen.

It wasn’t clear if Atwell would be back until today, as ABC had its presentation at the Television Critics Association Press Tour. ABC Entertainment Paul Lee said that the pilot script is already complete, notes Deadline. “The script is great,” he said.

It was written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas (Reaper, ABC’s upcoming Resurrection) will be the showrunners.

When TheWrap asked Fazekas about the series, she joked, “You know Marvel. I think they send Captain America after you. But we’re involved in it.”

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Lee is still confident in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., although he had to admit it was disappointing to see the ratings dip. He added that ABC Marvel shows will be targeted to a wider audience, while Netflix gets shows for the “super fans.”
