Perhaps we won’t get self-tying Nike shoes or hoverboards by 2015, but at least we’ll have a Back to the Future musical. A production based on the iconic 1985 film is set to hit London’s West End in 2015.
Bob Gale, who co-wrote the trilogy with director Robert Zemeckis, will be on board to co-write the book with Zemeckis, reports the BBC. Gale promised that the play will be “true to the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake.”
The play will include songs from the original film, which means that Huey Lewis & the News’ “Power of Love” should be an important part. Gale added that new songs will be added “to make a version of Back to the Future that is fresh, entertaining and takes advantage of all the amazing things that can now be done on stage.”
Universal Stage Productions, which has produced Wicked and Billy Elliot, is producing with Colin Ingram, reports Reuters. Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment will also be involved, as Spielberg was a producer on the film trilogy.
Jamie Lloyd is directing with new music from Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard.
The Back to the Future films starred Michael J. Fox as Marty and Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown. Lea Thompson, who played Marty’s mom in the first two and a McFly ancestor in Part III, was certainly excited about the news.
